Definition of Antigen
A antigen is epitope that specifies the A in the ABO blood group. It consists of four precursor sugars attached to glycoproteins of the cell membrane, also known as H substances, plus a specific fifth terminal sugar, N-accetylgalactosamine, that is attached by an enzyme. This enzyme differs from its homologue that attaches the B-specific sugar by one amino acid substitution.
